Laser Treatments
Limelight IPL Therapy in Clarks Summit and Scranton, PA - for sun damage, brown spots, and facial redness.
Limelight IPL Therapy at The Summit Aesthetics is an FDA-cleared intense pulsed light treatment that improves sun damage, brown spots, facial redness, diffuse rosacea, and broken capillaries – by delivering targeted wavelengths of light absorbed by pigment and blood vessels without disrupting surrounding skin. Every Limelight IPL session at our Clarks Summit medical spa is personally performed by Lori Barone, our Certified Cosmetic Laser Technician with more than 5 years of experience on the Cutera platform. Most patients across Scranton, Abington, Dunmore, and the wider NEPA region see visible improvement after a single session, with a series of three to six sessions spaced three to four weeks apart producing the strongest cumulative results. IPL works best on lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–III) and is not safe on darker skin. If you have Fitzpatrick IV, V, or VI skin, we typically recommend Laser Genesis or another alternative – Lori will confirm the right approach for your skin at your consultation.

What IPL actually is - and what it isn't
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike a laser, which delivers a single specific wavelength of light, IPL delivers a broad spectrum of wavelengths in each pulse – which the device then filters based on what you’re treating. Filter for one range and you target pigment (brown spots, sun damage). Filter for another and you target blood vessels (redness, broken capillaries, rosacea). The versatility across both categories in the same session is what makes IPL useful for the general photoaging pattern most patients present with: some brown spots, some redness, some uneven tone all at once.
IPL is often referred to as a “photofacial.” The two terms describe the same treatment.
IPL vs. laser - the honest technical distinction
Both use light to treat skin, but they work differently enough that the choice between them matters for your specific concerns.
Formulation
IPL (Limelight)
Laser (single-wavelength)
Light type
Broad spectrum, multiple wavelengths filtered per pulse
Single specific wavelength
Best for
Multiple surface concerns at once (spots + redness + tone)
Specific targeted concerns at defined depths
Depth of energy
Superficial to moderate
Depends on the laser wavelength
Skin type safety
Fitzpatrick I–III safest; IV–VI carries real risk
Depends on the laser – Nd:YAG is safe on all skin types
Session length
15–30 minutes for face
Varies by laser
Downtime
Coffee-grounds spot darkening for 5–10 days, then flakes off
Varies by laser
Best fit for
Comprehensive photoaging pattern (brown spots + redness + uneven tone) on lighter skin
Specific single-concern treatments; darker skin (Nd:YAG-based)
Neither technology is universally better – they solve different problems well. For the general photoaging pattern most patients present with (some sun spots, some vessels, some overall unevenness), IPL is often the best single tool because it addresses all of those concerns simultaneously. For deeper wrinkles, resurfacing, or treatments on darker skin, a proper laser (or RF microneedling) is often the better choice.
What Limelight IPL treats
IPL is particularly effective for the visible signs of sun exposure and vascular concerns. Common reasons patients come to our Clarks Summit medical spa for a Limelight IPL series:
Sun damage and photoaging
the accumulated brown spots, uneven pigmentation, and dullness from years of sun exposure
Brown spots (solar lentigines)
the flat brown spots that develop on the face, hands, chest, and arms with age and sun
Facial redness
diffuse redness across the cheeks, nose, and forehead
Rosacea (diffuse type)
the persistent facial redness that comes and goes with rosacea; IPL can meaningfully reduce baseline redness across a series
Broken capillaries
the small red vessels visible on the cheeks and around the nose (telangiectasias)
Freckling
particularly seasonal or age-related freckle patterns
Poikiloderma of Civatte
the specific reddish-brown chest pattern of sun damage that IPL treats especially well
Overall skin tone unevenness
combined pigmentation and vessel concerns producing an overall "unrested" appearance
What IPL doesn't treat (managing expectations)
IPL is versatile but it isn’t the right tool for everything. Being honest about the limits helps you decide whether it’s the right treatment for your concerns.
01
Wrinkles and skin laxity.
IPL works on surface concerns; it does not deliver energy to the deeper dermis where collagen remodeling happens. For firming and wrinkle improvement, RF microneedling (Virtue RF) or CO₂ laser is the appropriate choice.
02
Melasma.
This is important. IPL can actually make melasma worse. Melasma is a hormonally-driven pigmentation pattern that responds to different treatments (specific chemical peels, topical prescriptions, and careful sun protection). We will not treat melasma with IPL. If you're not sure whether your pigmentation is melasma or ordinary sun damage, Lori will assess at consultation.
03
Active acne.
IPL is not the primary tool for active acne. Chemical peels (VI Peel Purify) or other treatments are usually more appropriate.
04
Deep or dermal pigmentation.
IPL targets superficial pigment. Deeper pigmentation patterns require different approaches.
Body areas we treat with Limelight IPL
IPL works particularly well on any area where sun damage has accumulated – which is usually the areas you’ve exposed to sun most consistently over the years.
- Full face
- Neck
- Décolletage (chest)
- Hands (a highly-satisfying IPL area – hands often show sun damage before the face does)
- Arms and forearms
- Back and shoulders (upper back is a common photoaging area)
What to expect at your Limelight IPL appointment
Consultation (first visit): Complimentary, 45 minutes. Lori assesses your skin, evaluates your Fitzpatrick skin type (this matters more for IPL than most treatments), discusses your specific concerns, and builds a written treatment plan. If IPL isn’t right for your skin type or concerns, we’ll recommend an alternative.
Pre-treatment: Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for at least 4 weeks before treatment – IPL and tanned skin do not mix. Discontinue retinoids and exfoliating acids for 5 to 7 days before treatment.
The treatment: You’ll wear protective eyewear. Cool ultrasound gel is applied to the treatment area. Lori uses the Limelight handpiece to deliver pulses of filtered light across the area – each pulse produces a sensation most patients describe as a warm snap or a rubber-band flick. Not painful; brief. A full-face treatment takes 15 to 30 minutes.
Immediately after: Skin looks pink and feels warm for an hour or two. Some patients notice brown spots initially darken – this is normal and expected (see the “coffee grounds” section below).
Follow-up: Series treatments are spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart, typically 3 to 6 sessions depending on your concerns. Full results are assessed 4 weeks after your final session.
The "coffee grounds" browning - what happens to your spots
This is the single most important thing to understand about IPL treatment for pigmented spots. The immediate visual response looks alarming if you don’t know what to expect – but it’s exactly what should happen.
Time after treatment
What’s happening
What you’ll see
Immediately after
Pigment in the treated spots has absorbed the IPL energy and started to break down
Brown spots appear DARKER – sometimes noticeably so. Coffee-grounds appearance is normal.
Days 1–3
Damaged pigment migrating to skin surface
Spots continue to look dark or slightly rougher
Days 5–10
Pigment flakes off with normal skin turnover
Spots visibly lift off; skin underneath is clearer
Weeks 2–4
Ongoing surface renewal
Overall improvement in tone and clarity
After series completion
Cumulative effect of 3–6 sessions
Significant reduction in sun damage, brown spots, and overall unevenness
Do not pick or peel the darkened spots. They need to flake off naturally. Picking can produce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – the exact opposite of what you’re trying to achieve.
How many Limelight IPL sessions will I need?
Most patients complete a series of 3 to 6 IPL sessions spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. The exact number depends on the severity of your concerns and how your skin responds to the first two sessions.
Concern
Typical session count
Notes
Mild sun damage / general refresh
3 sessions
Spot improvement, tone refinement
Moderate sun damage / brown spots
4–5 sessions
Cumulative pigment reduction across the series
Significant photoaging / poikiloderma
5–6 sessions
Severe patterns need more sessions
Diffuse redness / rosacea
4–6 sessions
Baseline redness reduces cumulatively; ongoing maintenance often needed
Broken capillaries
2–4 sessions
Discrete vessels often respond within a few sessions
Maintenance: After the initial series, most patients benefit from a maintenance session every 6 to 12 months to prevent new sun damage from accumulating. Ongoing sun protection is what determines how long the results last – patients who protect their skin see substantially longer-lasting improvement.
Skin type honesty - why IPL isn't for everyone
IPL is genuinely safest on Fitzpatrick I, II, and III skin (fair to light-medium olive). On darker skin (Fitzpatrick IV, V, VI), IPL carries real risk of complications:
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (temporary or persistent darkening)
- Hypopigmentation (permanent lightening of the treated area)
- Burns and pigment shifts in the treated skin
This is not a marketing statement about skin diversity – it’s a technical limitation of how the device works. IPL targets pigment, and darker skin has more baseline pigment for the device to inadvertently affect. Providers who treat darker skin tones with IPL are taking real risks with their patients’ skin.
What we do instead for patients with darker skin: For sun damage and pigment concerns on Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin, we typically recommend VI Peel Precision Plus chemical peels (specifically formulated to be safe across all skin types). For redness and rosacea concerns on darker skin, Laser Genesis is the better choice – it uses a 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength that is safe across all Fitzpatrick skin types. Lori will discuss the appropriate treatment for your specific skin at consultation.
Limelight IPL vs. Laser Genesis - both Cutera, different tools
Both IPL and Laser Genesis are Cutera-platform treatments performed by Lori. They’re often confused for each other because they both improve skin quality, but they use different technology and address different concerns. Many patients ultimately use both across a treatment plan.

Combined use
Often used together – IPL for specific brown spots and vessels, Laser Genesis for background tone
Same – the two complement each other well
Many patients use both across a comprehensive skin plan. IPL handles the discrete pigmented and vascular concerns; Laser Genesis handles diffuse background redness and overall texture. Lori will build the right combination for your skin at consultation.
Limelight IPL aftercare
Aftercare is straightforward but critical – particularly the sun protection component. Compromising on sunscreen during and after your IPL series undermines the entire treatment.
For the first 24 to 48 hours
- Keep skin cool – cool compresses or aloe are soothing if the area feels warm
- Skip hot showers, saunas, hot yoga, and heavy exercise the day of treatment
- No makeup for the first few hours
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30+ every single day – starting the day of treatment
For the first 2 weeks
- Do NOT pick, peel, or exfoliate the darkened spots – let them flake off naturally
- No retinoids, exfoliating acids, or aggressive skincare until spots have fully flaked off
- Diligent sun protection – wide-brimmed hat outdoors, sunscreen every day
- No other facial treatments in the area until cleared by Lori
Ongoing during the series
- Continue daily sunscreen – not optional if you want the results to last
- Avoid tanning entirely during the treatment series
- Continue to protect the treated areas between sessions
Why "provider-consistent care" matters for IPL
IPL has adjustable settings for energy level, pulse duration, and filter selection that must be matched to your specific skin type, the concern being treated, and how your skin has responded to prior sessions. That kind of judgment improves substantially with experience.
Every Limelight IPL session at The Summit Aesthetics is personally performed by Lori Barone. The same experienced provider who assesses your skin at consultation is the one delivering the treatment, monitoring your response, and adjusting settings for subsequent sessions. There is no rotation and no delegation. That continuity is genuinely valuable across a 4 to 6 session IPL series where each session builds on the previous.
Specifically for IPL, this matters because:
- Fitzpatrick assessment. Lori’s 5+ years of Cutera experience means she reads skin type nuances accurately – which is critical for IPL where small assessment errors can produce complications.
- Session-to-session dose progression. IPL settings often start conservative and increase as the practitioner sees how your skin has responded. A provider who saw your last session adjusts accordingly.
- Recognizing when to stop. The endpoint of an IPL series depends on how your skin has responded. Sometimes 3 sessions is enough; sometimes 6 is needed. Continuity of care produces better judgment about when the series is complete.
The tradeoff we’re honest about: Because Lori performs every session personally, we book two to three weeks out for new consultations. If your priority is fastest possible booking, we’re not the fastest option in the area. If your priority is who is running the device, we’re the right fit.
Is Limelight IPL safe? Who should not be treated?
IPL has a well-established safety record on appropriate candidates when performed by an experienced provider. Complications are uncommon in the right patient with the right settings.
Common, expected, and short-lived
- Redness for a few hours after treatment
- Warmth in the treated area
- Coffee-grounds darkening of treated brown spots for 5–10 days
- Mild swelling in the first day (rare)
Uncommon
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (more likely if aftercare isn’t followed or on skin types outside I–III)
- Hypopigmentation in treated areas (rare with appropriate settings)
- Prolonged redness beyond a day
- Cold sore reactivation in prone patients (prophylactic antiviral is available)
Who should not get Limelight IPL
- Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding
- Anyone with Fitzpatrick IV, V, or VI skin – alternative treatments recommended
- Anyone with a recent tan or sun exposure – wait at least 4 weeks after tanning
- Anyone with active herpes outbreak, cold sore, or infection at treatment sites
- Anyone currently on isotretinoin (Accutane) – wait 6 months after finishing
- Anyone with melasma – IPL can worsen melasma; alternative treatments recommended
- Anyone with a history of keloid scarring in the area
- Anyone taking photosensitizing medications (discuss at consultation)
Frequently asked questions
Questions our patients ask most
How much does IPL therapy cost in Clarks Summit, PA?
IPL is priced per session and per treatment area. Face-only, face + neck, chest, hands, and other areas are priced differently. Series treatments (3 to 6 sessions) are typically bundled at a discount versus per-session pricing. Lori will provide a specific plan and total during your complimentary consultation. Call (570) 585-0201 to schedule.
What's the difference between IPL and laser?
IPL uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths filtered per pulse to target multiple concerns simultaneously. A laser delivers a single specific wavelength for more targeted treatment. IPL is often the better choice when you have multiple surface concerns at once (spots plus redness plus tone). Laser is often the better choice for specific single concerns or for treatments on darker skin (where Nd:YAG laser is safer than IPL).
Can IPL be done on darker skin?
No, not safely. IPL is genuinely safest on Fitzpatrick I, II, and III skin (fair to light-medium olive). On Fitzpatrick IV, V, or VI skin, IPL carries real risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, or burns. If you have darker skin and want to address sun damage or redness, we recommend VI Peel Precision Plus (for pigment) or Laser Genesis (for redness) instead. Both are safe across all Fitzpatrick skin types.
Can IPL treat melasma?
No – in fact, IPL can make melasma worse. Melasma is a hormonally-driven pigmentation pattern that responds to different treatments (specific chemical peels, prescription topicals, and careful sun protection). If you have pigmentation that looks like melasma, we will not treat it with IPL and will build a different treatment approach at your consultation. If you’re not sure whether your pigmentation is melasma or sun damage, Lori will assess.
How long does IPL recovery take?
The recovery is minimal in terms of downtime but has one distinctive feature: treated brown spots often initially DARKEN for 5 to 10 days before flaking off. This “coffee-grounds” appearance is expected and normal. During that window, most patients cover the spots with makeup and continue normal activities. The darkening flakes off with normal skin turnover; do not pick at it.
How many IPL sessions do I need?
Most patients complete 3 to 6 sessions spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. Mild concerns may need only 3; significant photoaging patterns often need 5 or 6. Lori will build a specific plan at your consultation and adjust based on how your skin responds in the first two sessions.
Does IPL hurt?
Most patients describe the sensation as a warm snap or a rubber-band flick with each pulse. Not painful, but noticeable. Topical numbing is not typically needed for IPL. Some more sensitive areas (upper lip, around the eyes) may be briefly more uncomfortable, but sessions are generally well-tolerated.
Is IPL therapy permanent?
The specific brown spots and vessels treated are typically permanently reduced. However, new sun damage can accumulate over time, which is why ongoing sun protection is critical. Most patients benefit from a maintenance IPL session every 6 to 12 months after completing their initial series. Patients who protect their skin diligently see meaningfully longer-lasting results.
Can I combine IPL with other treatments?
Yes. IPL is often combined with Laser Genesis (which addresses diffuse redness IPL doesn’t reach), chemical peels (for tone and texture), and injectable treatments (for concerns IPL doesn’t address). Lori will build a phased plan at consultation that combines the right tools for your specific concerns.
